Comment: Earthlink has a free, online scan for your computer; takes only a few seconds. Follow the link, then click on Spyware Scan on the Right; open the file (you can download it if you wish for later use) and it takes a few seconds. I suspicioned that there was still spyware on my computer-AdAware, Spybot and 'Blaster didn't find it. Earthlink found it, but labeled it as "being researched". It won't fix it for you, but it's nice to know what's on your HD. http://www.earthlink.net/

Reply: (edit)Hi ranchhand. I just ran it, and it detected 4 adwares, and 4 adware cookies. But unfortunately, like you said, it does not afford an opportunity to clean them. Spybot and Adaware do not detect anything...how do you find out what they are, and how do you eliminate them? Did you track down the one that was found on your computer? Thanks!

Reply: (edit)Well, thereby is the problem. The spyware that I have is so new there is no kill for it yet, but I have stopped it from functioning by emptying the file it works through, then resaving the empty file as "read only"; that stops it from hijaacking my browser. However, I haven't found the originating file yet, but there are two files I am real suspicious of and am researching to find out if they really belong in XP or not. The only thing I can suggest is to download and install as many free spyware killers as possible and hope one of them will kill it. Earthlink will kill it for you, but you have to subscribe to them. I don't know what it costs.

Reply: (edit)Eathlink told me I had Alexa, which AdAware and Spyboy S&D killed months ago. A search for Alexa on my computer found "NO" instances of it. AdWare and Spybt are the better option, Earthlink is false reporting. Iligitimi non carborundum est

Reply: (edit)Earthlink reported 4 items that were long ago removed by Ad-aware, Alexa also being one of them. Search turned up no such items. Makes you wonder, false reporting or could there possibly be something left over.

Reply: (edit)ranchhand, I did a search for the 7 Alexa dll's the article mentioned and nothing turned up. Strange how this spy audit can still detect Alexa as being installed.
