Reply: (edit)Nno such luck I'm afraid, you will get the so called free virus definitions and firewall updates for one year starting when you register the product, after that you will have to pay 14.95 for the following years virus definitions (does the 14.95 include firewall updates?) and the year after that it will probably be about 25.00 if my Norton Internet Security suite is anything to go by. Reply: (edit)That’s weird! I didn’t know you had to pay for them! I’ve been using Mcafee for 3 years now and it has NEVER asked me to pay for virus defs. Maybe it’s because I only entered my e-mail address and nothing else when it asked me to register? I don’t know, and I don’t really care! LOL Symbios Y!

Reply: (edit)Symbios...the funny thing is, is that you are NOT getting all the definition up-dates..you may be real virus prone by now. Avast! is free for home use and works great...TOTALLY FREE up-dates while you surf. I've used Norton, McAfee and AVG 6.0 and Avast! is the best one to date... If you need a simple solution, try mine. I try to give advise on things that have happened to my PC. Changes in registry can be FATAL! I now have a 95% success rate!

Reply: (edit)The reason you don't pay for MS updates is 1) the software's a hell of a lot more expensive in the first place & 2) the 'updates' are just fixes to cure problems. With AV programs, the companies do have to put in time combating new viruses etc. No idea how AVG, Anti-vir etc. manage to provide free versions alongside the pay ones, but you can bet it won't last long-term. Reply: (edit)Dont know why people quibble over a few bucks a year to keep their computer healthy. Its sad that so many people think software, music and books should be free.

Reply: (edit)The reason AVG is free is because it was developed and is maintained by volinteers. The reason McAfee, Norton, Panda, etc. charges for thier updates is because they have a team of dedicated personal on payroll combating new viruses. I have Panda and love it, alot better than Norton and McAfee, especially with thier new TruPrevent technology.

Reply: (edit)OK, if you re-install it every year its a pain in the neck to remove all the registry items related to the AV. If you leave some it will not re-install the software. My question is: which register is the one with the information that tells the autoupdate when the year is over? It must be somewhere guys! support free computing!
