folders turned to files on external hardrive

December 18, 2011 at 06:41:05
Specs: Windows XP
Some of my folders on my external hard drive have been turned into unrecognizable files.
I can't open them as it just brings up the 'select a program to open file' box.

Virus scan doesn't throw up anything?
Losing the will to live.... any ideas?!

change the attributes to show hidden, and make sure those folders are actually folders and not links. Many times a virus with hide your files and then produce fake copies of the origional, which link to a program the virus creator wants to be opened.

fix for missing files(ussually)

open a command prompt and type in
cd %driveextension%:\
(where %driveextension% is your drive letter...e,f,g)
then type attrib -h -s *.*
(then go back to your drive and see if your files reapear.)

to fix your actual issue, you will need to download a program like malwarebytes, or avast and have it scan the computer and the flash drive.

on another note, if you right click on the wierd folder and then click properties, it should show the target program, this is probably your virus, if you want to post back here with the name, I will help with more specifics if the malwarebytes doesnt go.
