Folders L-Z appear hidden on external drive

Seagate Freeagent go 250 gb usb 2.0 port...

Specs: Windows XP
I have an external drive for work on which to
backup files from my work PC. Recently I
created a new folder on the drive and the next
day folders L - Z were missing.

I attempted to create some new folders with
the same names as some of the "missing"
folders and got the message that they already
existed and if I would like to overwrite.

Obviously they are still there, but why can't I
see them/access them? I have unsuccessfully
attempted new USB ports as well as
accessing the drive from a few different
computers. Nothing shows up.

hi - I have exactly the same problem. I have an external HD and all of the folders from L to Z are missing. When I tried to make a new folder, it said that there was one already etc.... When I went to folder options and made hidden files visible I see them there, though feint compared to usual folders. .I am not so great at these technical things. Please can you give me some detailed instructions. I hope you had great success in restoring your files.
best wishes
