Before I had a router I was using an ADSL USB modem. With either the Windows Firewall running or Kerio, all ports were shown as stealthed using the Shields Up test.

Now I have a router with a firewall, the tests only show all ports as stealthed if the router firewall is on, even with the Windows firewall or Kerio running. Instead, most of them just show as closed. Can someone explain why this is please?

I assume that it is somehow tied up with the fact that the router acts rather like a server. For reasons of my own I sometimes need to turn off the router firewall. Does this mean that hackers can then sit and wait for ports to open, and that I am actually less protected (even with a software firewall running) than I was before the router was installed?
