Hi Michelle-- you only need them when you are on the net. For instance, when you do a download, you download it, then BEFORE you install it, you log off the net, and disable your AV so it does not interfere with the install. BUT BE SURE you log off the net BEFORE you disable the AV. To disable your AV right click the tray icon and click on the disable function and then go into close programs (ctrl+alt+delete) and close the program with the end-task button. NOT GOOD to be on the net without AV activated. (Don't worry about the firewall for downloads unless it asks you for permission to let it through, then tell it what you want it to do.) That means you have to reboot after you download to activate the AV again. I like to shut down for two full minutes rather than use the restart. Many pc quirks can be cured by shutting down for two full minutes.

I hope that is what you meant...

Ok, I see what you are saying. As long as they are active, not disabled, then they are trolling for trolls so to speak. There is a signal they receive that lets them know the net is incoming and they should be on the job. They are always 'on' as long as you don't disable them, but if you are off the net--not possible in your case unless you log off intentionally-- they are always monitoring the situation. If you are on a home network and using a router you should also think about a hardware firewall. If so, start a thread in "Networking" and ask about the best way to do that.

You should be able to log off the net because it is wise to disable your AV between download and installation, (otherwise it is possible that your AV will read some part of the installation as an invader and mess with it) and you DO NOT want to be on the web without the AV on. Then you have to shut down--and reboot. I always try to reboot after waiting two full minutes, not just restarting.

Unless you disable them they are always there.

What started this is my kids have their own computer but it is not connected to the net. So I put a desktop on mine so they could at least check their e-mail and do homework. There are times when neither desktop is running and it concerned me as to whether or not the firewall and AVG are still able to do their jobs or if I am at risk of something happening while Windows is on the log-on screen.
