Go to the PC FLANK, WILDERS.ORG and WEBATTACK websites to read the reviews about firewalls, and then choose the one that has the features you want. All the best!

yes, the best thing to do is to research each firewall and see what they can do. Many of the firewalls are good at one thing but bad at another thing. i've already tried 5 different firewalls (it doesn't hurt to try their free versions). Just make sure you get a rule-based firewall (it allows you to specify the rules exactly, like which application can have access to which ports at which time...etc).

most people prefer zone alarm...it's the newbies firewall...it's simple to use. But once you learn how to use firewalls, you'll want to switch to a better, more advanced firewall. If you have windows xp, don't get zone alarm...they don't play nice together

outpost has alot of nice features, but i couldn't get it to work on my machine (only flaws is that you can't password protect the firewall and you can't create general rules). Next, i like sygate (keeps great logs, it has a nice graphical interface). Tiny and kerio are the same...it's a really good rule-based firewall that hardly takes up any resources (I would have stayed with it, but when i was hacked, i decided to try a new firewall, sygate, which i liked enough to keep). Zone alarm was my first firewall (on my old computer). I was a newbie back then, and i was wow'd by it...the big red button that shuts everything down instantly (all firewalls have that feature). But once you see how much better the other firewalls are, you'll be able to protect your computer better. My firewall has been fine tuned...nobody will be able to get through my computer again (only reason why i got hacked was because windows xp has open backdoors by default)

how exactly would you know if ZA fails you???

if you have an exploit or an trojan on ur system, you and ZA will be none the wiser.

dont think because you have a firewall ur safe, because its no guarantee.

Zonealarm is a systems resource HOG,Just check your systems resources with and without Zonealarm on to see the difference. Also good
luck if you decide to ever remove it.
I would recommend KERIO,It uses almost no
systems resources and Is a way better Firewall.

I use Sygate free version. It is easy to setup and use.But judging by the feedback on this forum, there are other really good free firewalls also. You have to check them out thru reviews and decide which one is the best for what you need it to do.Regards,JB

Black Ice PC Protection. Yes....Black Ice Defender did not have such a reputable name when Back Orifice was able to get around it, but ... Black Ice Pc Protection is a hybrid of FireWall and Application protection. If you don't know how to set the things right, the pop-up things by it are annoying, but basically Black Ice monitors ALL Files on your comp and if one is running in the bground without your permission it alerts you and can terminate it. Thats the easiest way for me to put it in NEwbie terms.

I use Norton Personal Firewall 2002. It's easy to install, to configure and to use. I fell safe with it. I think that in security it worth pay some to be safe. I just don't know if there is a freeware version.
