Hi! all,

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Ok! here the problem...We are trying to setup a small network with 10 workstations(95(3), 98SE(3), 2000pro(3), ME(1)) and a server running WIN 2000 server with DSL. I am very much worried about the security of our network.
Should i have..
1. Firewall installed on every pc on the network(i know its dumb)
2. Firewall and antivirus on every pc on the network
3. Firewall on just the server.
4. Antivirus on just the server.
5. Anti-virus and firewall on the server.
5. Put a router with firewall in between dsl modem and the server.
6. put a router with firewall in between dsl modem and the server and anti-virus on the server.

sorry about being so dumb..but i just want a perfect choice. Please suggest me a good solution.

Thanx a million.

Cyrus.

Use corporate firewall appliance and install antivirus on your mail server.

Ask a security expert to do it for you. It will be a good investment

Most internet attacks are ONLY caused by vulnerable networks managed by lazy or dumb people.

Use a firewall appliance between your LAN and the internet - where it attaches into the LAN depends on if you use authentication from the server to determine internet access.
Use anti virus all round, on the server - with mail scanning if you run something like Exchange server, and on the client machines to protect against viruses coming in from floppies or cd's that the users bring in. Make sure that the client machine AV is also scanning downloads.
Also make sure the virus definitions are kept up to date.

On the AV side of things, Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition should do the trick, firewall depends on your budget, but Symantec (Norton) do a nice looking hardware solution, unfotunately I cant comment on its effectiveness as I havent used one yet.....(Cisco PIX is very good - but quite expensive.....)

Hope this helps.....feel free to email me (paul@linknetwork-solutions.com) if you need any more help

Coming from an Information Security sudent as well as an IT manager. first would be cost Analisys first see how much you can budget. second do some research on different products because each product does act differently to different systems ie( win 2000, 98, 98) you should though have Virus scanners on all systems. clients and servers. if you want to do upgrades remotely check out corporate virus scanners that have the ablity to do this from a console. as for firewalls. for a group of 10 i would maybe stick with something kind of small.a firewall between the DSL modem and sever would be a must . but how are you setting yoru network up? what Topology ring, bus, token..

email me about how u are setting the network up. can give you some pointers
