Subject: Firewall or not?
Comment:

Ok this is really really bothering me, i have no firewall, i just have the windows enabled one, and i have a router, which has one but i dont know if it is activated. Anyways i've been going to sites to do security tests at Symantec.com, PCFlank.com and GRC.com and they came up with the same results that my ports are "stealth!" and allways past the exploit test at PCFlank.com
i spend about 9-12 hours on my machine and the internet, and the only Security like software i have is: Norton Anti-Virus 2002, Ad-Aware, TCActive! and TCMonitor, and ofcourse the Windows Xp firewall enabled in my LAN, im verry paranoid that there is a keylogger running but done tests with Anti-Keylogger to make sure, but i allways think that they could fail. I have installed ZoneAlarm PRO before, and have some suspicion of installing it again basically because i think that i will not like it and then it will be all over the registry and leave other files on my computer or possibly other programs that hava "hitched" a ride on the program and allow it to be run, and i allways think that it would be difficult to setup and watch everything and know when something is happening that shouldnt be...so thats my paranoia

Any Suggestions?
Thanks alot
CJB

CJB.If you are passing those tests you are doing something correct! When I tried that test prior to installing ZA or Sygate,I had open ports. If you are thinking about installing a software firewall and don't want ZAPro,check out Sygate at wilders.org.Regards,JB

hi cjb,
since you have a router, you need to block outgoing data, so any good reputable virtual firewall will do the trick. for more info on firewalls and open ports you can visit www.thepublicworks.com security section and links to wilders.org for info on firewalls, practicallynetworked.com, and firewalls.com
once you done some research on firewalls you will find that the best ones are: kerio, look and stop, sygate, outpost and zone alarm (my opinion only)
hope this helps,
murve

Yeah, according to me, you still need a firewall. But many leaktests proof that the best firewalls are free. Try www.kerio.com
It works great!
It passes almost any test an it's free...

Yea,Jan is right you still will need a firewall.
I would try Kerio Personal Firewall it is the best in my Opinion, Hey Murve how long have you been using Kerio??? I have been sold on it now for about 8 months...

hi ghostman,
been using it for about 6 or 7 months now. and i'm convinced its the best. haven't had any problems whatsoever and that's not to besmerch any other firewall. i feel really comfortable with it and once you get used to making rules you have rock solid protection.
all the best,
murve
