I have two Windows 98 computers networked for playing multiplayer games via ethernet. I use one of the computers to access the internet over a 56k dialup modem. File and printer sharing is enabled on both machines. Only a single folder on each computer is shared (full access with password).
After doing a little studying, I have become aware of how easily those shared folders could have been accessed. My question is, could a hacker also access the rest of my C: drive? Or is the damage he could do limited to the shared folder? Can you gain control of the entire drive once you've cracked the shared folder's password?
Most security sites tell you to disable file sharing. So how do you run a small network and access the net with the same computer without having to disable and enable file sharing and rebooting all the time? If you have a software firewall installed, is it ok to leave file and printer sharing enabled?
