I previously had Norton Antivirus 2002 and had no problems. When I renewed my subscription I upgraded to Norton Internet Security/Antivirus 2003. After the program was installed, my computer ran very slow, but the bigger annoyance was that I couldn't play any CD's from my CD-RW-ROM; I couldn't play any DVD's from my DVD-ROM; I couldn't download any pictures onto my computer from my digital camera or scanner. When I'd try, I'd get the same message "connection error...check your connection..." I tried to disable the Internet Security, and it didn't help. I think I am supposed to create a "Port"? to allow the connection to be seen? It all sounds very confusing to me, so I uninstalled the Norton Internet Security. All my peripheral comonents are working beautifully, however I'm a bit nervous not having an Antivirus on my computer, as the Antivirus part of the program became uninstalled when I uninstalled the NIS.
I'm trying to get some response from the Symnatic support, as I have asked them to downgrade my subscription from Internet Security with Antivirus, to just Antivirus. They seem to be giving me the run-around.
Has anyone else had this problem? I'm thinking about downloading a free antivirus that I've been reading about, and just ditching the Norton junk all together.
Anyone?

Hmmm.. looks like you are having the same problem as we had in when the Compaq workstation we bought came with Norton Internet Security Suite. It really screwed up the network connection in the sense that it wouldn't allow the workstation to connect to our LAN or internet.
We had to disable the Personal Privacy & Firewall modules. After that we did not have any more problem.
AVG 6.0 is a good freeware anti virus programme. But not sure whether it will run on XP O/S. In our office, our Win 9x workstations run on AVG and it has proven its reliability over time. Limited functionalities but if you are not that paranoia about controls & features, AVG is a good anti virus to have & use. You can get a copy of AVG at www.grisoft.com.

you shoule be able to just install nav2003,
then if you want a firewall try sygate free version, it is easy to use and doesn't mess with other stuff, once you ok it for ie, oe and nav updates ,you hardly know its running.

I am not sure about NIS 2003, but with previous versions if you had another firewall installed you could select an option to disable the installation of the Norton Firewall. Get and install either Sygate or Kerio firewall, and then see if 2003 will detect the existing firewall and allow you to just install the antivirus program. You will know right away if it will work, because the action is required right at the beginning of the Norton installation, so there is very little to loose. If the option does not come up cancel the installation. You will need an antivirus and a firewall installed of some type, so there is nothing to loose. If you have the box and receipt return it to your dealer for a refund, or contact Symantec for a refund.

We had similar problems with Norton; we paid the $$$ for the 2003 upgrade, it never worked, it buggered the computer, Norton tech support was useless, and we ended up with AVG. Get rid of Norton if you can.
Ironically, every time I tell this story on this forum, I get 10 pieces of spam trying to sell me Norton software.

susieQ, if Symantec offers you no assitance, "reinstall your 2002 antivirus". You should know that it is just as good as 2003 at detecting viruses, and you already know it works good on your system. Just reinstall it from your 2002cd.

I can't tell you all the problems I had with Nortons, and the point is you paid for it already, see if they will refund the difference? Also Susie I think you had Zone Alarm, are you sure if you do have it, that you uninstalled every file, that may be causing some problems with Nortons Security, I think the two together may cause you some problems, look for every file of zone alarms uninstall instructions. AVG works great with xp and so does free Sygate and of course Zone Alarm works too for most (not me) messes up my call wave..unless I put to med and I don't want med protection. Get all over them and demand the money diffence back and yell at them for the 2003 virus protection alone...Good Luck. Sue

If Sue is correct about you using Zone Alarm before, reinstall it. I recommend Sygate as a first choice to people that are just getting a firewall, as it is easy to remove should they not like it. ZA runs pretty deep and many people have trouble removing all of it. I would still reinstall 2002 after all the hassel you have had with NIS, you deserve a Symantec gift! Take care and good luck!

Thank all of you for your responses! I think I'm going to try to reinstall Norton Antivirus 2002, if that won't work I'll install AVG.
A question about firewalls, I have my system run thru a LinkSys router. I understand that the router has a firewall, and I was also under the understanding that the cable modem also had firewall. ...and doesn't XP have some sort of firewall? I guess I'm just confused about this firewall business.
Can anyone clear the muddy waters on firewalls for me?
Thanks
susieQ

2002 will work!! The benefit of a software firewall is that you can moitor and control outgoing traffic requests. The XP firewall only blocks incoming traffic. Some Linksys routers are hardware firewalls, but I think you would have had to do some setup to use it if it had firewall capabilities. The jury is locked on phone modems, but if you have a cable connection, you need a firewall as you have the same ip address. Someone thought you had Zone Alarm before you got NIS, if you did and liked it just reinstall it. If not get Sygate or Kerio, and be sure to disable the XP firewall when you install it. When you reinstall Norton 2002, do the complete installation and just go ahead and register it as it will work properly! After all you did pay for it. Take care and all the best!

Capt,
Thanks for the feedback. I did re-install Norton 2002, and it works fine and my subscription is intact. The Norton Technical support people have been of no help. They want me to re-install and update my DVD-ROM; and CD/RW-ROM drivers. It doesn't seem that this will address the digital camera and scanner issues. Anyway, I'm done dealing with them.
No, I haven't had Zone Alarm. Are any of the firewalls you mentioned free? How do you disable the XP firewall?
Thanks for your help.
susieQ

susieQ, then get Sygate, as it is the easiest program to use and is rated in the top three. Should you do not like it, it is easy to uninstall. To disable the XP Firewall: open-Control Panel>Network Connections>right click-LOCAL AREA CONNECTION>PROPERTIES>ADVANCED and uncheck PROTECT MY COMPUTER. Take care and all the best!
