Fake Security virus

April 16, 2010 at 21:33:38
Specs: Windows Vista

My computer seems to have picked up some sort of virus/malware or whatever. It keeps coming up with a security warning like it's my windows security. Won't let me get online to download a virus remover. Keeps popping up with all types of warnings and then tries to get me to purchase a virus remover. I don't know how to restore to factory settings but don't know if this would clear up the problem or not ...anyone know how to fix this? I am a total computer illiterate so make it easy if possible ....lol. Thank you!!!!!!!

What operating system are you on?

We could try disabling it long enough to have some legitimate
antivirus clean it up.

Try going to Start > Run > Type "msconfig" without the
quotes

Go over to the Startup tab and see if you find an entry
corresponding to the fake antivirus program thats running on
your computer. If so, uncheck it, click apply, and reboot. Then
run AVG or Avira plus Malwarebytes to catch the culprit.

If not, try posting your list of startup entries here and we'll see
if we can find it. It's also possible that it just won't be listed
there, but we can try some other steps if that's the case.

try downloading a program called Malwarebytes or spybot search and destroy and see if you can run those two programs.
