Fake or Not?

Specs: Windows XP
I was online. Internet connectivity ended and a window popped up. The heading said "Automatic Updates". As an icon, there is the four quadrant flag (like the Microsoft Windows emblem) that overlays a globe. The wording says "How do want to install updates? Windows found 1 update. This update requires that you first accept license terms." Then there are two options, Express Install and Custom Install. Also, there is now a shield icon in the lower right hand part of my computer. The shield is yellow with a black exclamation mark on it.
What concerns me I cannot ged rid of the box. Neither clicking the cancel button or the "X" in the upper right hand corner gets rid of it. And, the icon reappeared in the lower left hand side when I rebotted the computer.
Is this a fake or real?

check what process is being used by this program/windows. go to application tab of task manager, right click on selected icon, and select goto process. if process highlighted is wuauclt.exe then your program is real else if your process name is from internet browser then it is fake
