external drive amd64 i386 un-accessable

Specs: Windows XP sp3
I pluged my external drive into a friends computer and his amd64 2500+ XP SP2. His computer wouldnt let me safely remove the drive at all and I had to turn the pc off. then when I looked there was a folder with a random name on my drive containing an amd64 and i386 folders which where from that point on un-accessable on his computer and mine, I can't delete them or open them. Also I quite often get delayed write failures when I turn it on at home and I have to un-plug it etc. Is it worth scanning the drive for viruses? is there a program you can use to delete folders you dont have access to?

I looked at the security part of the folder on a vista system and the folder was registered to a user name of random numbers and letters and It said administrator had access but this was wrong, and I couldnt change the security settings.
