I was playing a videogame on my computer, and suddenly it froze. After restarting my computer, I receive the following error message:

"Explorer.EXE -Application Error/ The application failed to initialize properly (0X0000005)/Click OK to terminate the application." And of course, since explorer won't start up, nothing on my computer functions, save the task manager. I'm currently using a different computer.

I'm not sure what is causing this, so the security and virus forums seem most appropriate. I'm going to continue searching for information on this subject, and I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks

I apologize for the double post, but I solved the problem by running system restore from the task manager. Although unlikely, if anyone else is having the same problem, this is how I solved it:

1)Press ctrl + alt + delete to open up the task manager.

2)Go to File --> New Task(Run...) and type in C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe

3)Follow the simple step by step instructions to restore your system to a previous point in time.

I'm still not sure what caused this, so if you know it, please post the cause of this problem.

It is a problem with Photoshop. Version 7 but it sounds like 6 also does this. You can re-install Photoshop, just don't make it the default program for opening Jpg and Gif files (during the photoshop installation process, anyway). After Photshop has been installed, you can go to the file types in "Folder Options" (under tools at top of all folders) and make it so Photoshop opens Jpg and Gif files.
Another problem is with Spysweeper. Disable Spysweeper or even uninstall it and you'll get rid of this problem. I fought with this issue on a computer a friend had until I figured that out.

By restoring without really changing anything, you'll likely encouter this problem again soon.

Post back if you do.
