|I'm not sure what kind of virus my dad downloaded onto his computer but as of right now, his computer under HIS account on windows cannot open .exe files because every time he does it asks to find the location. This includes essentially all non-system file .exes that start up with windows (antivirus/etc are not appearing on his taskbar). When I finally did get firefox to open by opening firefox with firefox then canceling the download of firefox from my desktop -.- and started searching for fixes I kept getting redirected by plomedia. I am familiar enough with computers to know that plomedia is a browser hijacker so obviously he's infected but the .exe problem does not sound like the work of polomedia. Unfortunately, that problem is making fixing both problems basically impossible. I've finally gotten avast to open by having it open itself but it's outdated and I can't update it without running a .exe. As of right now, I'm running a thorough scan that I hope will find it but I'm not confident at all that it will find the solution to both problems. |
Oh and I tried importing a fresh registry value for what .exes should default as opening from (from a a person who had a similar .exe problem and solved it that way) but that didn't help.
So basically, my questions are whether anyone is familiar with what virus might be causing this second issue and how to fix it given my circumstances and, in the worst case scenario, if there is a safe way to backup computer files before reformatting the pc to ensure that the virus won't travel with the backed up files.
