Subject: Every second boot into safe modeOS: 98seCPU/Ram: PII 266/128MB |
Comment: My box (PII, 128MB ram, 98se,IE6 (on cable)) insists on booting into safe mode. From there a restart gets me up and going, but foly huck !what a lengthy process. Device manager shows no anomalies, msconfig startup, win in, boot tabs are cool, no driver issues discernable. On post I see my NIC and graphics card share an IRQ (5) - this OK? Everything was working just fine up till a few days ago, when my son attempted to get Final Fantasy X off Kazaa. The install failed, but spawned some strange files/folders. Shell32.exe (which I've read is a trojan), and 94 files with numbered names: e.g. "927927.718" What TF are these?

Reply: (edit)If your son is downloading from Kazaa without scanning the files, you have been the victim of a virus/trojan/worm. If you scroll down to below this post and read; "I hate to do this...but feel I must", you can see what the unsophisticated and unwary Kazaa user can expect. Go to the PC Flank website and run their trojan scan. If it is positive get TDS, Tauscan, Trojan Remover and check for a trojan. Use your antivirus program to scan for a virus. If your antivirus and firewall programs are disabled or not working correctly, you know you have an infection that has shut these programs down. Go on line to House Call from the Trend Micro or the scan at Symantec website, and use that virus scanning program to identify the virus if you cannot use your antivirus program to identify/clean/repair the attack. Post back with the results, if you need more assistance. Take care and all the best!
