Just thought i would mention that even with Spybot,Ad-ware,spyblaster,Spywareguard , your still at risk.Im a perfect example of that.I updated all my antispyware software yesterday before a full system scan, and the scans came up clean. After the scans i went into the sart menu, and noticed a program that wasnt there before,it was called powerreg scheduler v3.When i did the reasearch it came up as spyware.I was totaly surprised to see that spybot, nor Ad`ware was able to detect this with prior scans.Go`s to show you that even with all this security installed your still able to get infected.Peace.

Hi there, sure you're able to still be infected. I don't care how good these programs are---and I have all of them, believe me, they still aren't nor will they ever be "impenetrable armor". I assure you that spyware will get easier to catch and harder to kill.

The whole point of these programs is they help, and we can use all the help we can get our paws on. The end user has to help the programs help them however. It won't do a lot of good to install the programs yet still knowingly surf the spware-infested websites. ( Considering the recent argument in here, let me assure you I'm not accusing you of surfing bad websites before someone comes along and yaps at me saying I am)

Anyone who will tell you that these programs give you a zero chance of catching something is a fool. Those who tell you they greatly lessen the chance providing you do your part, is a wise man/woman. I've heard of this powerreg thing you speak of, in fact I've seen the name many places. I will try and look up exactly what it is for you.

One question, had you looked at the start menu during the previous scans? Try to scan once again as this may have been installed after the scan you did yesterday. From here on out, look in Add/Remove programs and the Start menu before doing scans to see if an unexpected guest is there, then do the scans.

This way you'll know for sure if the programs really did miss something.

You can lock your doors and install alarms in your house and auto as well but they does not mean someone will not steal your car nor break into your house.

You are taking preventive mesaures and that is all. You should also run a pop-up blocker as well. I can hit any web site out there and not worry about infections of spyware or hijackers because my system is locked down tight and I do use Internert Explorer which is not the problem, it is the end user that is the problem.

dw226,

I do not care what anyone says. Most people that get infected with spyware are going to adult web sites or looking for warez and cracks or game cheats. Also 90% of the computers I have to fix from spyware/hijackers are because of teenage boys and take a guess what a 16yr old boy does when nobody is home???

Regardless of what Suzi posted from Spywareinfo.com I will always stick to my guns that most people get infected because of seedy web sites.

Have you turned n spybot's immunize and bad download protection?

Start spybot> click red immunize button> ok the popup> click immunize at bottom of window> scroll down to permanently running bad download blocker for IE> click install.

Another good program is IE-Spyad...it puts over 5000 known bad sites for hijacking, trojans, spyware, etc in your restricted zone in internet explorer. The restricted zone disables java, active x, etc so they can't infect you. It won't protect from everything but a good additional layer of protection.
Read the info on install, update instructions ...it is a little different install procedure.

IE-Spyad

And of course...make sure you have all your critical windows updates.

Good luck!

Hey there Kevin, I didn't say he DIDN'T go to those websites, I just said I wasn't accusing him of it. It is quite possible to get this stuff elsewhere. If you go to MTV.com or even WWE.com, you'll find yourself bombarded by all kinds of Flash ads and popups.

So with all that happening, who knows what else the website is trying to unload on you. You and I both know those seedy websites cause the overwhelming majority of these issues, but this problem is showing up many other places. I myself have started using Proxomitron WITH all of the other usual weapons in place, so I'm safer than I was, but still not immune.

Oh, yes, I know what 16 year old boys do, I used to be one :-) The porn thing is to each his own, the hacking and crack warez websites, well, you get what you get if you play around with that.

dw226,

I know you did not say he did :) and as far as MTV and WWE if they where messing up systems they would be under fire for it. I just use a mean pop-up stopper that allows me total control over what comes across my screen.

Back to the org. topic though. It all comes back to taking steps to prevent the nasty stuff from entering your computer and one of those steps is being carefull where you go on the world wide web.

It is sort of like going into the bad part of town. The first time nothing might not happen but if you continue to do it night after night something bad will happen to you in the long run.

The world wide web is not that much different.

I agree with you totally on that Kevin. The one thing I would say about the whole WWE and MTV coming under fire issue is that many who visit them are a part of the crowd who don't protect themselves or even realize what can happen.

Now if you or I visit there and it happens, we'd get on the bullhorn, but we know what is out there and what to do about it. Now I don't how true this is, but as I had said earlier, I'm taking Proxomitron for a test drive and it seems as if it would do a lot of what our other programs do, in fact much more. maybe this would be another tool in our arsenal.

It certainly interferes with nothing, which a proxy will at least slow you down often. For those who don't know, Proxomitron really is a proxy/web filter. Any page you load goes through it first. Say goodbye to all ads, which usually only a paid program will do, also Flash, cookies, and a lot more. It also has tons of filters relating to javascript and java.

It's a heck of a program, but just to be safe while testing it, I still have all of my other programs updated and running. If it really does exactly what it seems it can do, and does it well, it's quite possible that the amount of security programs we use can be cut down dramatically.

I'm going to run more tests on this and see which programs I can do without and which I'd rather keep. I don't know if anybody here has run it, but if so give some feedback please.

Joe, one thing you did not mention was a firewall. I get several attemps each week trying to access my browser, be it mozilla or IE. I simply deny any access to these. Lately the biggest offender is from devnull.megaprovider. Might start bouncing them....
