OS: Windows XP, Serv. Pack 2
CPU/Ram: Intel 4/ 1.5 Gig
Product: Gateway E-4600
Comment:

I could use some help dealing with these error messages I get when I boot up my computer and when I try installing/uninstalling programs.

The usual message I receive when trying to install programs such as AVG tend to be something like this,w ith a big black command window popping up:

16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
C:\WINNT\system32\drwtsn32.exe

The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0563 IP:0116 OP:63 05 c8 53 ee

Also happens with install shield as well, getting an error message:

Error Code: -5011 : 0x80040707

So they all must be linked. I've tried several virus scans over and over and nothing has seemed to pick up. I have a hijack this log to post at the ready if need be, I could just really use some help..I can't install anything!

The Hijack This log looks clean, all the info if find points to a rare install shield problem.

AVG antivirus may not installable any longer as it will be discontinued as of JAN 15, 2007 but I think the AVG antispyware is usable.

If you want to see a suggested fix and if you are comfortable editing the registry look at this link, scroll down to the xp/2000 suggestion: http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108167

I looked and followed the instructions on the installshield site, and everything looked fine, nothing still hasn't been solved. Thanks for the help, though.

I really don't want to resort to reinstalling Windows as I don't want to lose most of my files and programs.

Those error codes look like a failing memory stick.
