After running a virus scan with the Free edition of AVG i checked the log and noticed that several files were not opened and checked. I rebooted in safe mode to do another scan but i get an error which says 'driver(core)not found winerr=2' when i try to open AVG. I ran adaware, spybot,CW shredder without any problems. One thing came up in CW shredder which was 'cw.msconfig' which i fixed. All the programs i used have been updated everyday (also zonealarm). Can someone tell me what this error means and how i can fix it? Thanks for any help.

You need to obtain and install the most current version of the AVG according to this MS KB

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3BEN-US%3BQ814437

Hope this helps

Hi XPUser,
Thanks for your reply. I checked out the link you gave me. I have installed all the latest AVG updates, i have version 6.0.698 and there seems to be no further updates available. I'm using Office 2003 but the MS link you gave me states a problem with Outlook 2000 and Office 2000 with no mention of Office 2003. If you have any other suggestions i'd be grateful, thanks.

Not sure if this helps.

I've googled the net with the keyword "Driver (core) not found" and thought this one (see below) is more appropriate for your situation. You may also want to google the net using a combination of keywords derived from the error message you received

Hi XPUser,
I had a look around in the site you gave me but i can't seem to find anything that helps. I tried uninstalling AVG and reinstalling/updating but i still recieve this error. Windows is up to date as with everything else on this computer. I'm at a loss.. I don't see any point keeping AVG if i can't run it in safe mode. Any other suggestions would be appreciated by yourself or by anyone :) thanks.

avg does not run in safe mode but it supplies the 3 floppy disk u need to boot up your computer in ms-dos mode so no programs at all are running..

aka..the black screen..create the rescue found in services..at top.....u will need 3 floopy disk 1.44mb.

once done restart your computer with 1st disk in and make sure your bios is set for floopy boot up first.

avg takes care of the rest..dos mode is much better than safe mode because safe mode still loads up windows os files which viruses can still piggy back on.

with ms-dos mode nothing is loading but what is on floppy disk..thus u have boot from floopy

oh a good rule is if u going to use rescue disk make sure your 1st disk has system files on it..go thru my computer right click on a:..format and check system files..then

go to avg to make rescue disk

enjoy hope this helps

Although this resolution isn't specific to AVG, but there may be parallel issues relating to installing Norton antivirus in Safe mode.

NAV can be installed in Safe mode only in Windows 98/ME. For Windows NT/2000 or XP, users have to install NAV after doing a clean boot. Try installing AVG after doing a clean boot might also fix the problem for you, here are the directions from Symantec for cross reference:

Btw, since some antivirus should not be installed in Safe mode, you might want to check AVG website for proper installation direction for the version you are using.
