erratic behavior

June 25, 2009 at 09:07:46
Specs: Windows Vista
I think I'm infected with something that has not been protected by Norton yet.

Whenever I am on a powerpoint and I try to create a new slide, I click over in the slide bar. It keeps creating hundreds of slides. If I click in a text box on the slide, it enters down over and over again. It has logged me out and then popped up the "logon screen" and it keeps popping "invalid user name or password" The reason why is because it doesnt give me time enough to put in a password...

Any ideas?

Does the problem only happen with PowerPoint?

Download and install Hijackthis from the following location:

Right Click the Hijackthis icon and choose "Run As Administrator" .

At the Main menu choose "Do a system scan and save a log file".

A log will open in Notepad. Copy and paste the log to a post in this post chain.

First problem is you have Norton AV running, AVG8 running and ClaimAV running.

You should only have 1 antivirus program running at any one time. Please uninstall 2 of them. If you decide to uninstall Nortons, please use the Nortons Removal Tool from this location:

You have 3 entries that are suspicious:

O1 - Hosts:
O1 - Hosts: mail01
O1 - Hosts: mail01

The first is a local company close to where I live that delivers to convienient stores .... (trucking company) ..

I would remove them at this time ...

Open HJT by right clicking and choosing "run as administrator" . Do a scan only, Place a check beside each of the 3 entries in HJT and scroll to the bottom and have HJT fix.

Please download combofix to your desktop. (MUST BE RUN FROM THE DESKTOP)

Please review the instructions here for running combofix.

Disable all active security programs before running combofix. (Real-Time Protection) These can cause combofix to freeze or not run properly.

Close all open programs.

Double click the combofix icon on your desktop to begin the scan and approve any warning messages you get.

Before the scan begins you may get a popup asking if you would like to install the Windows Recovery Console. At this time i would not install the recovery console.

Do not use you mouse or try to run any other programs while Combofix is running. This can cause combofix to freeze.

The scan will take between 20 minutes to an hour and at times may appear to be frozen. Once the scan completes combofix may reboot your computer to finish any removals when needed.

After the reboot a log should appear on your desktop. Please paste the complete contents of the log here in this post chain.

These are fine. They were put into the Host file per the company. I actually work for them, and I am their one and only IT. However, I was always taught it's better to have more than one virus scanner, than just one. The person of this laptop installed a label printer on Monday, they said it didn't install correctly. I have uninstalled it. Do you think that could fix problem?

Combofix will run on Vista ...there is a slight risk when running combofix as you see with its warning messages as you begin the program.

If you feel combofix is too much of a risk. Some of the other techs run a few scans that are less risky. I will be happy to leave them a message asking them to take over this post. However they may find you still need to run combofix.

okay. sounds great. I have done a disk cleanup/de frag and I'm doing a disk check right now. It actually seems to be working a little better since I took out that printer.

Hi i am going to try to help you since XCrossWindsX requested. I am going to need some additional logs. Please follow:

Note: I can help you remove malware manually. Please avoid installing/uninstalling or updating any programs and attempting any unsupervised fixes or scans. This can make helping you impossible. First Track this topic. Then follow:

1) Can you please post your AVZ log:
Note: Run AVZ in windows normal mode. If avz.exe doesn't start, then try to rename the file avz.exe to something else and try to run it again. Make sure you have your web browser open in background before following the steps below.

i) To create the log file, download AVZ by clicking HERE. Please save this file to your desktop or "My Documents" folder.

ii) Next, unpack the file to a new folder using the Compressed (zipped) folders wizard built into Windows XP/Vista, or a zip utility of your choice.

iii) Once you have unpacked the contents of the zip archive, please launch the file AVZ.exe by double clicking on it or right clicking and selecting Open.
Note: If you are running Windows vista launch AVZ.exe by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator.

You should now see the main window of the AVZ utility. Please navigate to File->Custom Scripts. Copy the script below by using the keyboard shortcut CTRL+C or the corresponding option via right click.

ExecuteAVUpdateEx( '', 1, '','','');

Paste the script into the execution window by using CTRL+V keyboard shortcut, or the "paste" option via the right click menu. Click on Run to run the script, the PC will reboot. After the reboot the LOG subfolder is created in the folder with AVZ, with a file called inside. Upload that file to and paste the link here.

Image Tutorial

2) Download and Run DDS which will create a Pseudo HJT Report as part of its log: DDS Tool Download Link. When done, DDS will open two (2) logs

   1. DDS.txt
   2. Attach.txt

Upload the logs to and paste download link in your next reply.
Note: Disable any script-blocking programs and then double-click on the DDS.scr icon to start the program. If you did not disable a script-blocker that may be part of your antimalware program, you may receive a warning from your antimalware product asking if you would like DDS.scr to run. Please allow it to do so.

If I'm helping you and I don't reply within 24 hours send me a PM.
