Anyone use Eraser 5.82? I see a problem w/ "On Demand" erasing of prefetch files.
The eraser forum / support is kind of weak. Lots of questions from users never get answered, including this one.
Under "Files on Folder", I selected "C:\Windows\Prefetch\". (I think that should be "Files IN Folder").
All options on that screen - "Subfolders", "Remove Folders" and "Only Subfolders " are all UNchecked. When through erasing, it says those prefetch files and a few others like index.dat, are locked (this is normal). I give Eraser permission to run at next startup to finish erasing those, and it does erase all the others EXCEPT the prefetch.
Is this a bug (can't really find a bug report / list on Heidi Computer's site)? Or am I missing something or doing something wrong? ...Nah, that's not possible.:D
Thanks.

Now XpUser, don't make me come over there.
Yes, I did try Eraser forums - many weeks ago, and contacted developers.

Did you have a suggestion besides that?

No only because I don't need to use many third-party programs, including this one.
In my experience many third-party utilities do not deliver everything it claimed on every PCs and when they don't deliver the author is nowhere to be found.

Hi
the new ccleaner.com has some secure deletion ability and cleans dat files ,
suggested as an alternative.

1stepbeyond,
Yes, I have CCleaner. It's good for what it does, but is quite limited. That' OK. You can define custom folders or files to be erased in CCleaner, but to do only those custom, and not the others, it requires a lot of unchecking and then rechecking boxes later.
A program like Eraser has a tremendous amount of flexibility, both in what & how you're going to erase.
I have read (and correct me if misinformed) that many programs like CCleaner don't actually securely erase files which are locked by Windows, that require a reboot to delete. They just get deleted, if that's a concern.
If desired, a way to securely erase some locked files seems to be to log onto another administrator acct in XP, then it seems prgms like Eraser will erase those files under another inactive Windows acct. I think you can do a quick switch user acct.
