What was the size of this pst file when you copied it?
If it was 0 kb - the you chose wrong file. If this file has a size then maybe you are pasting it to a wrong folder.

Default location of pst file in XP is in \Documents And Settings\username\

As SSHGuy said, how large is the pst file that exists on the USB drive? Are you sure that you once you copied that file back to the newly loaded drive, that it's actually listed in the Data Files for Outlook?
