Hello,

Recently someone sent my ex-girlfriend an email that appears to be from me. However, I know it wasnt me and would like to know how this is possible. I have a hotmail account. I was looking up email anonymizers, but didnt get to far. Basically, can someone choose the details of the information that eventually appears in the inbox of the person? Can they fake the user name and email address to appear as though I sent it. Please help me with this as it is a serious problem. Thank you.

PS. If posted in the wrong forum, please direct me towards the proper forum.

Someone that had your email address in their address book got infected. Your address is then used to spread the infection to other people. I have not had a virus/worm/trojan, but I receive notification, daemons and other notices that my address was used to send a packet. A recent popular infection method was to use an undeliverable mail notice with an attachment containing the virus/worm/trojan packet. This was to get the unsuspecting person to open it to see what was going on. Using Hotmail/Yahoo/Eudora is one way to prevent virus attacke, as these spoofed emails come to you as "bulk mail". Using Outlook/Express requires that the securuty setting be establised properly and that email is set to read in "plain text" to prevent "html" features from being used by a virus attack. Take care and all the best!

I appreciate the reply, but I guess I was somewhat vague. The email did contain some text written to her. Something which I did not write. Is there anyway for someone to do this?

Someone may have gotten your password and used it to send her an e-mail. I suggest changing your password.

Alright, basically, in her inbox, she received an email from me, with stuff in there. Personal stuff.

The "From" thing said my name as well as my email address. For example, From: Joe Blow [Joeblow@hotmail.com)

She uses Outlook at work. Her sister also works with her and has access to her outlook. My theory is that somehow the sister was able to send her an email under my name and say some s---ty stuff. If this is the case, how was it done? Can it be done? Can you send an email from some website and just plug in the details yourself? Like Im sending an email and I decide to make it look like in reality someone else sent it? Sorry, this is a very tense moment here and Id like to get to the bottom of this as it was not me who did it.

I doubt her sister has my password, since Ive never given it out to anyone, not even my ex gf. However, now that I think about it, I think Im going to change my password.

YES! with Outlook Express it is very simple to send an email with somebody elses email addy as the FROM. I'm not sure Justin would like me to tell how, but is is very easy.

have the x-gf open the email from 'you'. then she should click file/properties/details/message source.
there will be lines that say it came from Outlook or Outlook Express, not hotmail.

tell her to look for an X-mailer line.

then you send her a real email & she can compare the two. the headers will be very different.

you didn't date the sister after you dated the x, did you??

Thanks a million guys, hopefully this will help out alot. Can you show me how to do it so I can send her an email as herself and prove to her that it can indeed be done? Shes not really good with computers, only what she needs to know at work. This would be much appreciated, if not, either way, sonny youve been a tremendous help. Im going to show her the responses you have given me thus far.

And no, I never dated the sister, she just never really liked me. We have recently been discussing getting back together, the ex and I, and its a coincidence that this happened right at this time. Im not positive its the sister, but Im not sure what else to think, who else might have been able to do this, resend an email with personal information, that also then said a bunch of nasty stuff, and sent it as me.

Slate magazine fell for a spoofed address too, so it isn't unusual. This article of theirs describes how spoofing works. The author sent his wife an email from the President of the United States. Outlook Express does not verify the email addy you tell it to use. I never used Outlook but it apparently has the same exposure.

Anybody who knows your addy, her addy, has access to Outlook and knowledge of details could have sent the email.
