Reply: (edit)They are all your employees right!, tell them you'll need to have everybody take an exhaustive background check and maybe a lie detector if no one confesses to sending the email. Eitherway if you find out the whodunit, reward him by announcing a raise in front or everybody else for his temerity and fire him just before the paycheck reflecting the raise going into effect. Do not type anything in this space.

Reply: (edit)Adam, it is very possible that you can find out who sent the email with a bit of work on your part. First off - what software are you using to read the email? And how was it sent - company Exchange server, or over the Internet? Whatever the answers to those questions, you are really looking for one thing - the address of the computer the email was sent from. If it was sent from a computer at your place of business, you should be able to identify the computer (and its user) fairly easily. If the email was sent over the Internet, it may be more difficult to correlate the sending computer with a person. But not impossible, especially depending on how much proof you really need.

Reply: (edit)The IP address the email was sent from is in that load of ips letters and numbers. Copy and paste it here, I or somebody else will be able to tell you which address is the sender's. It will also probably tell you who the sender's ISP is, which may help you guess which employee sent it.

Reply: (edit)$39.95 to trace the source of an email from the headers? Can you say rip off? ;) Oh, and this is a good one: $7.98 to Trace IP Address (Returns City, State, Lat, Long & Owner of IP). That's just a simple whois query, which can be done for free at any number of websites, or by any number of free programs. I really hope nobody gives these people any money. Adam, just post the email header here. I or someone else can tell you how to decipher it. I'll even do it for free - but you can give me $39.95 if you want to :)
