Comment: The free service at the link below may or may not work: http://www.computercops.biz/article770.html But, an easier and proven method is to just ADD your own EMAIL ADDRESS to your EMAIL ADDRESS BOOK (as a new contact) and make the EMAIL TITLE something like WARNING: FROM MYSELF - POSSIBLE INFECTION. The reason this works, is that if ANY virus or Trojan or illicit program SENDS out email from you (to infect others) it will also SEND that WARNING email to yourself, thus alerting you immediately to ANY goings on. Granted, it won't stop it from sending, but at least you'll be aware that it is happening. It is mainly a final defense method, used behind other security methods like regular anti virus updating and scanning, regular antitrojan updating and scanning, regular malware, adware updating and scanning, regular security scans and audits of your PCs, etc.

Reply: (edit)EC That assumes that the Worm will either send from ALL Addresses in the Address Book or will only pick that particular Address What if it just picks a few at random? Lesley

Reply: (edit)You can also put an entry like name AA00 e-mail address AA00AA00 in your address book (change the third and after characters to suit you) so that it is at the top of the list and has an invalid e-mail address with no domain name. This will cause you e-mail server to bounce it back as an invalid e-mail address if used. And some virus check the address field for the @ character to make sure it is really an address book. They give up if it does not look like an address boot file.

Reply: (edit)One thing I find works (if worm didn't kill your firewall) is to have firewall ask permission every time email app wants internet access to send messages....If YOU didn't start email to send msgs and it's asking for access....warning bells should go off and you can block it, then clean out the worm. Most of the newer versions of antivirus now have "worm stopper" feature in them as well as pro versions of some firewalls that will warn you if tons of emails are being sent in short time or to tons of contacts. You can set the numbers how you feel to trigger the warning...that of course assumes that the worm/virus/trojan didn't disable firewall or antivirus and they are up to date.

Reply: (edit)Let me say again, this works, not to PREVENT the infection, but to ADVISE you of it starting, so you can act immediately. It is not a first and final defense to anything, but an additional layer to have in place.
