virus free browsing? I surf the odd "risky" website but download and open only non-executables (mp3's, mpeg's, pdf's - no scripting is enabled in my viewer / player software). Tell me your opinion....

Can I REALLY get a virus, worm or trojan if:
I run no email, chat, messaging, scrips, IE (using Moz.Firefox). No NetBIOS, etc. Only logged in as restricted guest (story of my life!).

My firewall is Kerios blocking ALL incoming ('cept reply ICMP's and two IP's at port 53 for the DNS) and informing me of ALL outgoing 'cept Moz.Firefox (at remote port 80)
I also use a proxy (the ISP).

Where can a virus worm or trojan come in from?

Just by opening those particular files you are asking for it. Never download anything without saving it and scanning it first. Pictures are safe yes, but file extensions can be deceiving.

Alternative browsers will help matters a bit. But if you fortify IE, you'll also lessen the risks. You say you won't run anything like e-mail and what have you, lol, why bother being on the net then?

Just keep Windows patched, your firewall configured, anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-trojan software updated and enabled, and the more risky settings in e-mail and IE disabled, and you're pretty well covered. You're still likely to get some virus now and again, that's just the way the internet is now.
