If I encrypt a text message using say AbiCoder and attach to e mail, what is the degee of security in transit?Looking for an ad hoc solution without recourse to pgp.Would using this method via web mail be less secure?

the person you're sending it to will need the same program to be able to decrypt it.

You should look into Digital ID's. If the person you're sending a file to has a digital ID, you can encrypt the file with his digital id. The person can then decrypt it. It's much simpler to do because all modern e-mail clients handle digital id's now.
