Specs: xp pro, 4200+ amd athalon, 1gb ddr2 mem

Almost every time I click my start menu, my computer freezes and I get a DrWatson Postmortem Debugger Error! My husband's cpu is in the shop b/c of a rootkit - could the two be related? Help!

try tapping f8 and select safe mode with networking. See if you can access the start menu in there.
While in safe mode, download and run these in the exact order:
1- rkill.exe (will stop the malware process)
2- tdss killer ( will remove the unwanted rootkit if there)
3- malwarebytes (run a full scan and fix all it finds)
Then reboot your PC and try it again.

Just to clarify - it doesn't happen every single time I open the start menu.. probably only 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 times. Do I still need to start in safe mode to run what you recommended above?

Thanks!

I found the malware bytes in the link you posted, but where do I find the other 2 programs?

Ok ran the 3 programs/scans you advised, and removed 3 problems.
Rebooted normally, and then had "file lock setup.exe" come up as "failed to initialize" when i shut computer back down....
