I'm sorry for the OT question, but I couldn't find a more suitable category to post this at....

....Is downloading music or movies from the net "illegal"? If it is, then why are programs such as Kazaa and Overnet still available? It seems that the feds are simply using them as bait to rip Americans off from millions in fines...

The reason it is still around is because there are some legit uses for P2P. Heck, a lot of universities and agencies use it to trade large files with each other.

The truth is, P2P in the illegal sense will be with us for a long time to come, they cannot truly "catch everyone". Their hope is to fine enough people to scare off the others, well, that's not working all that great.

You are much more in danger of getting viruses and trojans than you are getting caught. That is what makes it a bit dangerous, not cops lurking in there waiting for you. Forget the moral part, just look at the danger part and decide for yourself.

If a song or move is copyrighted then it is illegal to download that file unless you pay for it or have consent for copyright owner for you to download it.

P2P programs are not illegal to use or own just as in the US I can own/carry a firearm but if I use it in a maner to harm someone the maker of the firearm is not responsible for my actions nor are the makers of P2P programs.

How the end user uses the program is what makes it illegal, not the program itself.

Who are the feds to other countries? Who owns the internet? Who can say we stop this or we stop that? Its too broad and vast for one country to stop a perticular action. True enough each country can if they so decide to make and inforce laws within itself to stop such practices but what does that mean to another country? Its not the feds who started the suits against Americans but rather the Recording Industry Association of America! Greedy b---tards!

Roll with the changes! Lets Roll!

The greedy buggers are the people who think that they have the right to take a product without paying for it. I think that my bank makes large profits, but that doesn't give me the right to rip it off.

People will rip off whatever they can get away with.

There is a differance between making a reasonable profit and robbing people blind!
