I had something blocking my Explorer from browsing. I ran Norton, Proxomitron, Zonealarm and Lavasoft. My system was apparantly clean, according to those programmes. Finally i admitted defeat( i also had the mysterious "About Blank" popups, and uninstalled and reinstalled my XP OS. Then stupidity took over and i loaded other programmes and accessed the net before hooking back up with my Norton and Zonealarm. My PC collected 32 viruses in 3 minutes, from Wav Central, i think.
I'd been offline 4 days and in that time my subscription to Norton had elapsed - why the heck they didnt warn me, i do NOT know. I downloaded AVG and tried to clean the system, as i couldnt connect to LiveUpdate to renew the subscription. It found and cleaned 31 bugs and announced i had "Downloader.VB.EC" which it could do nothing about!
Finally, i connected to Symantec and renewed my subscription BUT to finalise this i need to access LiveUpdate and something is preventing this. The programme just halts.
In the meantime i collected and cleaned off another 5 bugs, despite AVG running.
I updated XP, got Zonealarm running and now i am semi-back to normal with the exception that the "Downloader.VB.EC" is still active, i have something called "Bargain Buddy" parked on the system and i cant delete it, but Zonealarm blocks it, and "Save" from accessing the net.
Symentec have no mention of "Downloader.VB.EC" on their list and neither has Mcaffee.
Is there anyone out there knows what i should do? Please?

I recommend you reinstall Windows XP. Right now, it sounds like it's in a bit of a state. But, before you do it: pull out your Internet connection. Delete your partition and make a new one. Install Windows XP on this. Now install ZoneAlarm and AVG (or Norton if you still have a subscription). Block everything with ZoneAlarm unless you completely know what it is. Once you've plugged in your Internet connection again, update your virus definitions and do a full system scan (just in case).

I hope this helps,

James

Hi,

I also was warned by my AVG about trojan downloader.VG.EC. However I was able to update my avg to the latest datafile (dated
9th of April 2004). I blocked all connection to internet with my Zone Alarm and then scanned the hard disc with avg which properly found the virus and told then that it had healed the system.

After that I went on started searhing for more information on the virus. However f-secure, symantec and trendmicro knew nothing about this virus. That makes me think that it it might be a new one, because I see that the previous messages have also been posted just today????

I still feel a little bit nervous thinking that the virus might still lurk somewhere in the system...

Both zone alarm and antivrus programs are a must today. Without them it is just too risky to do any surfing in the internet these days.
