Subject: Downloader virus
OS: XP SP2
CPU/Ram: 1G
Model/Manufacturer: Generic
Comment:

Everytime I click any Internet Explorer Icon I get a alert from Norton telling I have a virus named downloader and the file name is c:\windows\system32\__C00ECBA.dat (which is also listed in registry key "AppInit_DLLs". It is always in use (even in safe mode) and I cannot get rid of it (also my IE has recently become unstable). I have a hijackthis log if required.

Please download and install the latest version of HijackThis v2.0.2:

Download the HijackThis Installer from this link: HijackThis

1. Save " HJTInstall.exe" to your desktop.
2. Double click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
3. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
4. Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
5.Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
6. Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
7. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
8. Paste the log in your next reply.
9. Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Thanks for looking into this for me.

System is running: XP SP2, with all high priority updates from Microsoft installed.

Some history:
I have been looking around different forums and notes as well as talking to colleagues (I am in an IT business) to get my system back up and running.

I have run: FixVundo (from Symantec), VundoFix (Atribune.org) and VirtumundoBeGone (all in normal mode; not safemode) as Norton had notified a "Vundo" infection and Adaware specified "Virtumundoo" registry keys.

Have run full virus scan with norton and it has only found the "downloader" virus on file c:\windows\system32\__c00ECBA.dat which is also in the "appInit_DLLs" registry keys as described. The system is creating many win[xx].tmp files in my c:\windows\temp directory.

I installed Adaware 2007 and have performed a clean, re-booted, cleaned again, re-booted and it reported system is clear.

I have also noticed that the "RAS AUTODIALER\Address" registry key is having a number of entries added to to?

My IM is very unstable; crashing after a few minutes of being open.

The attached HijackThis report has been generated after the above:

In Add/Remove:
Myway, MyBar, Gozilla, GO!Ailla did not exist in
"My Search bar" did exist and was uninstalled.

Ran Hijack This and removed entries as instructed. Ran ComboFix. Logs attached.

"Downloader" virus no longer being detected by Norton, IE seems stable.

Open Notepad and copy/paste everything between the X"s into it and make sure "File::" is at the very top of the page.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drvsin.dll

Folder::
C:\VundoFix Backups

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Go to File on the top bar and choose" Save As", Change the "Save As Type" to All Files, Name it CFScript.txt then save it to your desktop.
Then drag/drop the CFScript.txt onto ComboFix.exe (the red X on your desktop) if combofix does not auto start click "run".

Please download ATF-Cleaner to your desktop from this link
http://www.atribune.org/content/view/19/2/ We will need it later in safe mode

Empty the restore folder. Go to start>control panel>system>system restore tab>check the box beside "turn off system restore>apply (takes a minute)>ok. Go back and uncheck the box to turn system restore back on>apply>ok.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

Restart your computer

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;

Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;

Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".

Choose your usual account.

Run ATF-Cleaner from safe mode.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

Post a new Hijack This log and a new Combofix log please.
