Recently got infected with a number of rougue 'pretend to be' antispyware programs such as AntiVirProtect & WinSpyKiller. Norton antivirus, Spywarebegone, and an online scan by Trend 'Housecall' did not solve the problem. After searching the net I followed the advice to download and run the free version of SuperAntiSpyware. This completely fixed the problem and I was so impressed that I am going to purchase the Pro version that provides real time protection. My dilema is whether there is then any point in renewing my NAV subscription as well. The underlying question is does a 'Spyware' detection program remove viruses as well - Is it all just malware or are they fundementally different
Any views (or good links) on this will be much appreciated

Heya AJinUK,
SUPERAntispyware I found does scan for and remove various Trojan Horses and Viruses, but it's primary intention is to target and eliminate spyware and adware.
It is definitely a very good antimalware program but to be honest I feel it isn't ideal to use as an antivirus replacement or alternative.
Antivirus programs are essential because they offer much more virus definition signature files, updates are more frequent and can be quicker to update and intercept the most recent threats.
If you are looking for an AV replacement that you don't have to pay for there are planty of free alternatives. I use Avast! myself and in my experience feel it is much better than Norton AV. I have tried all the free ones and stuck with Avast! in the end. It is Windows 2000 compatible also.
If you decide to give Norton the flick and give a free AV program a go be sure to download the Norton Removal Tool to rid it completely from your system.
Click here to go to the Norton Removal Tool page
Click here to go to the Avast! homepage
If you decide that you would like to give Avast! a go, once the installation has finished let it run the boot-time scan. Don't be surprised if it detects stuff that Norton AV neglected to.

Hi btk1w1,
Thanks for your speedy & comprehensive response.
This is basically what I suspected, but nice to have it confirmed.
I will give the Avast a try
Thanks
AJinUK

NO.
ANTI VIRUS kills viruses.
ANTI SPYWARE kills spyware.
WINDOWS UPDATE patches software holes.
