Movies *can not* cointain viruses or spyware. What is possible is that you download a file with two (or more?) extensions (like AVI.EXE) which then seems to be a movie. But that *does not* make it a movie. So...

There have been exploits involving Windows Media Player, but a movie shouldn't be able to infect your system. If you're truly paranoid, or just want a better media player, use VLC.

Harmful script code can be run in an unpatched media player 9. I am pretty sure it can be within the media file.

Who knows what other harmful code will be written in the future. Downloading anything from an unknown source can have some danger. There are always the first few people who get infected with and report a new virus.
