I have identified the divxc.exe virus but it won't delete using 'hijack this' and my own virus checker AVG6 didn't find it. Can anyone help please as it appears to be disabling my msconfig and regedit
Thanks Zeta

I am not familiar with this virus, but you've piqued my curiosity. How did you identify it? How do you know it's a virus? Why do you think it's disabling msconfig and regedit?

Hi Zeta & iamc
10000 Apologies. I was helping Zeta on the W95/98 forum and an HJT log was quite genuinely posted there "in error".
I now see what went wrong. I Googled for divxc.exe and must have somehow hit their "did you mean divx.exe" link and this led me to the MASTAK virus. The lack of the letter c made all the difference....
Having said that, although it doesn't appear to be a virus after all, the log says it is a WMP7 codec for XP, which is a tad odd to be on a W98SE machine.
May I ask Zeta if you have done a "Find" for divxc.exe on your system to see if the file is actually present.
The previous goings on (including log) can be found here:
W95/98 162562Sorry again about the mess up (too many late nights on there maybe). If anyone can check out the S&V aspects it would obviously help us both.

First of all I unticked all the boxes in msconfig and using the startup list on the link you gave me put them all back - problem not solved.
I have just done a 'find' for divxc.exe and it produced a 60kb application folder that won't open and cannot trace the file path - it is dated 21/9/04.
Haven't checked out the other tabs yet.
Friends are saying to me 'can't you just crash it and start again?' - may this be a final option
Zeta

Seems the problem has now been solved on the other link. Zeta will no doubt shout back if any further S&V info is required.
Thx
Derek.W
