What is the difference in a virus, a hacker and spyware when it comes to identifying them?

I connect via a dial up program and connect at around 28.8 - 32 Kbps.

I am noticing that my outbound bandwidth is around 8 kb/s.

How do I find out what is causing this?
How do I fix this leak?

Sounds pretty normal to me if you are using a 56K modem. What seems to be the problem?!
