Did blackout, worms mess up forums?

There were two discussion groups from which I received regular digests of postings, for 2 years. They both quit about the time of the blackout, or maybe shortly after. Did the blackout, or the recent worm and virus attacks, mess up news/discussion groups and wipe out their mailing lists?
I've been booted off discussion groups (due to my diplomatic sense of humour, I guess) but not two at once, and one of them I don't post to. This seems an odd coincidence.
