Please help me. I suspect a virus and have no access. The pc peforms post, beeps once and freezes. It won't read a CD or a floppy. Both light up and stop, preventing me from running any virus diagnostics. Desparate for help.

Did you put a boot disk in the floppy drive
and nothing happened?

Yes. I used a win98 startup bootable disk. From the CD I used the Win98 OS disk. Neither will read at all.

Check your Bios. Yours may be worded differently but here is my settings to ensure it will boot from a floppy.

Standard CMOS Setup.
================================
Drive A: 1.44M 3.5in.
Drive B: NONE

Advanced BIOS Features
================================
First Boot Device Floppy
Second Boot Device HDD-0
Third Boot Device CD-ROM

Integrated Peripherals
=================================
Onboard FDD Controller Enabled

Check the BootDisk in another computer if possible.

Does the light on the floppy stay lit or does it go out?

Do you receive a message Invalid Disk?

Good Day!
Mesich

I've check bios and it is set up to boot from the floppy which in this case is called the removable drive. Yes, this boot disk does work in an another machine. After it beeps, it reads a: for 2 seconds and then the light goes out and the cursor just blinks. No Invalid Disk message, no message at all. Thanks. DDlaz

Ddaz,

what type of motherboard do you have?
what type of memory do you have?
what type of processor do you have?

does your system only beep once... or is it a series of beeps?

answer the above and I will get back to you...

Thanks to all who have helped. Problem is now fixed. I removed both hard drives and replaced the lithium battery since prior to this the clock time was off. After I put the hard drive back it booted. I'm scanning the drive now for virus. Thanks to all! The pc is a Dell 450 Pent. II running win98. DDlaz
