Solved Desktop shortcuts being opened by Microsoft Word

January 26, 2014 at 02:53:57
Specs: Vista
I was given a copy of TuneUp Utilities 2013 and installed it on my Vista laptop. Not sure if that would cause my desktop shortcuts to be opened by Microsoft Word. Deciding to check my laptop for viruses, I ran my usual programs... Spybot, MalwareBytes and AVG. Cleaned out what was found then ran another Maintenance from TuneUp Utilities. Following day, my desktop icons are now being opened by Microsoft Word. I've tried. FixIt and Kaspersky in Safe Mode and the problem is still there..Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jeannette

Go into the Tuneup Utilitie's Rescue Centre and undo all the changes it made.

If this doesn't work, use Windows System Restore to revert back to a date prior to you installing/running TU.
How To:

Most, if not all of these so-called 'tune-up' tools are a waste of time and money, and cause more trouble than they're worth.
You have to be very careful/selective in what you allow them to do.

There are free tools available (eg, CCleaner) which are better and safer; + a little bit of PC housekeeping. It's all you need.

Pop back to let us know how you get on, or if you still have problems.

Peet100: Thanks for your fast reply, unfortunately, the undo in TuneUp Utilities did not repair the problem. I was surprised to see that I don't have any Restore points to go back on. I forgot some years ago, my system was restored and now I get an error message saying that 'my shadow' Vista re-install has an error. So now I'm discovering more problems that I have to deal with. I will go back to where I purchased my laptop and see if I could get a clean re-install. The problem that I am having now is making me aware of other problems to deal with... especially needing a good restore point. Thank you for your help. If my system would be healthier, I think your suggestions would have solved this current problem. Best regards, Jeannette :)

I came across a short comment in a search and thought I would try it. I reverted back to Google Chrome and it solved the problem. My shortcuts no longer default to Microsoft Word and I can also now create a restore point. I could not believe that the problems were caused by deleting Google Chrome. I was ready to have the system wiped out and a new OS reinstalled.
I will see how my laptop reacts in the next few days and if I find there are further problems, I will come back and add more comments. For now, I hope its all fixed by the simple reinstall of Chrome. Thanks for the replies and the help. Jeannette :)
