Did limewire alone do this to your desktop?... or was it from a nasty download?

You can post your HJT log so we can have a look.

Heya maltd,

I've had a good look over your log and there is one entry that I'm not sure of, do you know what NavigationAdvisor is?

First thing we'll try is to restore your pc to an earlier point in time.

Click "Start" > "all programs" > "accessories" > "system tools" and click on "system restore"

Choose the option to restore your pc to an earlier point in time and select a date prior to the limewire download.

Hopefully this should return your desktop and control panel back to normal.

Let me know how it goes.

OK... We'll try a different process.

We have to decide whether malware is the cause so we'll need to run an online scan.

Click here for Kaspersky Online Scanner

1.Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner".
2.You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
3.The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
4.Once the files have been downloaded click on "NEXT".
5.Now click on "Scan Settings".
6.In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
7.Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
8.Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
9.Click OK.
10.Under select a target to scan, select "My Computer".
This will program will start and scan your system.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Upon completion, click on the "Save as Text" button.
Save the file to your desktop.

Copy and paste that information in your next reply.

One more thing maltd... Do you know of any restrictions that would have been placed on your pc by an administrator to prevent users doing anything they weren't meant to?

If this is a home pc and you're not sure or if you are the only user this wouldn't likely be the case.

Ok... We'll use HJT to fix 2 lines in your log that could be the cause of the restrictions you are experiencing.

Right click the start button and click explore... Navigate to C:\Program Files and create a new folder in here named HJT. Now browse through the Program Files directory until you find the Hijackthis executable file, cut and paste it into the newly created HJT folder.

Basically we want Hijackthis in its own folder (HJT) in the "Program Files" directory. This is so when we run the repair Hijackthis can store the backups in it.

Once you have created the new folder with Hijackthis in it launch the program and select "Do a system scan only"

Navigate to these 2 lines and put a tick in the boxes:

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present

Now click on the "fix checked" button.

After the fixing is done reboot your pc and see if you have your desktop back and the control panel is working again.

Can you run HJT and have a look to see if the restrictions have been put back on please.

If they have there is something applying them and I suspect it is NavigationAdvisor.

With the removal of the policies NavigationAdvisor has now disappeared from the HJT log.

Can you have a look in add / remove programs in the control panel and see if NavigationAdvisor is there... if it is remove it.

Also navigate to here C:\Program Files\NavigationAdvisor and delete the NavigationAdvisor folder.

Open HJT again and "fix" this line also:

O16 - DPF: {CAFECAFE-0013-0001-0017-ABCDEFABCDEF} (JInitiator 1.3.1.17) -

Reboot and let me know how your pc is operating now

All suspect entries I can see in your logs have been removed.

I have requested a second opinion from another very experienced helper to see if they can see anything I might have missed.

They may request additional programs be run to identify a malware issue or if policy restrictions have been put in place.

Due to the time difference there may be a delayed response.

Hi maltd and btk1w1,

Do you still have restrictions?

Ok. Download and run this tool, it will fix the common restrictions applied by malwares.

Download:

SDRegFix

Restart your computer after running this tool.

Let me know hows running. And also post fresh Hijackthis log for review.

Ok!
Let me fix it by myself.

Open Registry Editor through Run box.

Open Run box form start menu and type regedit and press enter.

Go to this path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

>right click on "Internet Explorer" key and click "Export"
>it will ask you to where to save. Save it anywhere. (it will be saved as .reg file)
>right click on this saved file and click "Edit" , it will be opened in notepad.
>copy the entire text of this file (to copy press ctrl+A) and paste it into next reply.

can you upload the screenshot of your problem?

Sorry for delay, Actually i was busy! And i could not put my constration to your post.

Yes there are some registry changes by malware. Lets do fix.

STEP1:

Please run HijackThis again! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries if present:

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

STEP2:

Copy and paste bold text in notepad and save with the name regfix.reg on your desktop. (selcect "Save as type" to All Files).

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\ActiveDesktop]
"NoActiveDesktopChanges"=dword:00000000
"NoEditingComponents"=dword:00000000
"NoDeletingComponents"=dword:00000000
"NoChangingWallpaper"=dword:00000000
"NoAddingComponents"=dword:00000000

Now double click on regfix.reg and click Yes to add into your registry.

If you do not get then
You can also download this file from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?nmbeimn7ec2

Hope you will not face it more.

Let me know.

FEW THINGS TO DO FOR YOUR FURTHER PC PROTECTION.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

How to prevent further spyware/virus infection:
read here:
http://spywaredetail.com/steps.htm
http://spywaredetail.com/tips.htm

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently:
It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition:
AVG Free Edition is the well known antivirus protection tool and provides the high level of detection capability.

Download: http://free.grisoft.com

Install Ad-Aware 2007:
Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

Download: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products...

Install Spybot Search and Destroy:
Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software.

Download: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/...

Install SpywareBlaster:
SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Download: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spy...

Install SpywareGuard:
SpywareGuard provides a real-time protection solution against spyware.

Download: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spy...

Install IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.

Download: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/...

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

NOTE:Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.
