Desktop Icons and Taskbar Have Disappeared

Specs: Windows XP
(I have a Windows XP system) A few days ago, I had updated my Spyware Doctor with Antivirus, after I had run the scan, and cleaned out some bugs, I decided to go on the web to do email, etc. A pop up window came up and asked if I wanted to do updates for Spyware Doctor, then another popup came up saying it had found some viruses and it had to shut down my computer to get rid of them. I think I was duped, because after the reboot, all of my icons are gone on my desktop and my taskbar is missing as well. Anything I want to bring up I have to go through the task manager for. There's no doubt I've allowed something into my system and I need to get it out. Does anyone have any suggestions?

tap f8 on bootup and go to safe mode. Once there, do a system restore back to before the problem.

Some HELP in posting on plus free progs and instructions Cheers
