Deleting files reappearing

Specs: Windows XP
I have been deleting and moving .jpg files to free up space on my hard drive, only to find that even if I also delete them again as contents of the Recycle bin, the files return (in addition to the ones I have moved) so I now have an even less space on my hard drive. Is this a virus or a faulty hard drive or windows gone mad.

How are you deleting them from the recycle bin? The first thought would be that you are restoring them rather than emptying the recycle bin. Try bypassing the recycle bin by holding the 'shift' key as you press delete.

I did actually use the Empty Recycle bin option. I definitely did not make any errors in the actual deletion. My gut feeling is that this is somehow caused by a virus, but no one seems to have heard of a virus that would act so strangely.
