Today I was just about to check for e-mail and Zone Alarm reported that ddhelp.exe was trying to access the internet. (224.0.0.2) Is this normal or is it something sinister?
Thanks, anyone.

Do you have Windows set to automatically update? It may well be Windows trying to update/upgrade your DirectX version...just a guess.

No. At least I don't think so. But, I had been updating manually from microsoft update site earlier that day.
