Have Window Washer to remove existing DAT files as they occur and 'thought' it did the job but found an over 6 MG file under SYSTEM DAT with every site ever visited along with a great deal of other jargon.

Index.dat files are recreated by Windows at start-up if they are deleted. These files store your surfing history even after you have deleted this history, cookies and temp Internet files. To see exactly what these files store (and you will be surprised) get the free program SPIDER from..... http://www.fsm.nl/ward/ Spider claims to delete the contents of these files with Win 98 but on my PC (Win ME) it did not work properly. To delete these files (which will be recreated but the contents will be cleared) I use DELINDEX.BAT - a free program from... http://www.burzurq.com/forum/delindex.html You will need a start-up disk to use this program because the index.dat files are protected by Windows and can only be deleted when in DOS.
I use Spider for a 'before & after' test to see if Delindex.bat has done it's job. Delindex.bat will also remove other stuff if you select the option, so read the ReadMe files before using these brilliant programs.
Three cheers for Renaissance Man & Ward van Wanrooij.
