New to DSL. Always used software FW's w/ dialup (ZAP last few yrs). Not sure if the "free" DSL modem will have any built-in FW.

Is using a hardware (DSL modem or a router) AND a soft FW now almost mandatory from a security standpoint?

I only have one computer now. Might be a 2nd in future. Thanks for input.

A hardware firewall (in the router) protects you from outside attacks. A software firewall stops trojans and other nasties from calling home.

I think this is a good approach to security.
