If I leave my computer on or use it through midnight, it seems to consistantly give me an 0E exception error at an address with only 0s and Fs. I tried using NAV to scan and found nothing. My definitions are out of date but since I tried searching on the internet for a virus with the same symptoms and found nothing, I'm not sure what to believe. I know it's something on my computer itself because if I change the time to near midnight on my computer it gives the same 0E exception within a few minutes. I even tried searching my registry for something that may be set to run at midnight to no avail. Is this a virus? If not what else could be causing it? I'll followup with more details of the 0E exception shortly.

Win 98 1st edition?
Out of date virus defs?

Search this forum for "online virus scan" for lots of links.

Download and install Zone Alarm and set it to "always ask." If it is a trojan trying to connect, ZA might generate a log before the pc crashes.

You can also try HijackThis. You might be able to see if anything strange is running.

You should also update windows 98 to SE - there were lots of security patches. There have been many more patches since. If your o/s does not have the security patches....

First off, I appreciate your help.

I don't think it's someone trying to use a trojan to connect as this happens whenever I set my computer to a little before midnight it crashes at midnight but only according to my computer. I have been changing the clock on the computer to avoid the crash or cause it.

The exception is actually an 0D and it just says the current application will be terminated. It's at 00000:FFFF I think.

I am running critical update notification and have installed any updates it notifies me of. It could be a virus still, but why in the world would I not find any information about it on the internet?

I do keep track of the processes and I can identify all of them.

I intend to get virus defs updated shortly, although I have my doubts that will help because Symantec does not mention anything like the symptoms I have on their website.

What I'd like best is to find a name or removal tool for this virus/trojan.

I meant that the trojan itself might be programmed to "dial home" at midnight.

I do not know which trojan does this. Hopefully somene will.

I said this in another thread, and thought I did here as well (but i didnt). Download and install the free version of Zone Alarm. Set it to "always ask" for any connection.

It will tell you the name of anything trying to connect when it asks your permission. That should help to look up the name of the malware.

You can get it from Wilders download page.

Rueben.

Check out this and see if it might help you track down your problem.

I agree that you should have a firewall in place to protect yourself. A firewall is simply a program or hardware device that filters the information coming through the Internet connection into your private network or computer system. If an incoming packet of information is flagged by the filters, it is not allowed through.

I think this firewall be helpful in determining if your computer is attempting a connection to a remote machine or if a remote machine is attempting to reach your machine.

Hope this helps.
