I am concerned about a file on my friends system, It is located in C:\WINDOWS\STARTMENU\STARTUP. This particular file is called CQG.exe. To spite all my efforts to rid his system of this file, it may delete when u hit delete or del it thru DOS but on start up it just re-appears again. Some more symptoms of this posible virus is:

1) When the file is exicuted it will not
show up in CTRL+ALT+DEL

2) He can't quick time or any of his QT
movies.

3) It takes auto protect off Norton anti-
virus 2002 and will not let him scan a
thing.

Can anyone perscribe a cure for this?

Jordo

Sounds like a virus to me, especially it's action toward Norton.

You MUST visit www.symantec.com and do THEIR scan on the PC and see what the result is and it mat be able to clean you.

Stubborn File deletions can be done
in SAFE MODE of WINDOWS, but considering you are dealing with a virus, it's important to CLEAN your drive of the virus correctly.

hi jordo,
no use deleting the file first off. since you say it is in your start up. try typing in msconfig.exe in the Run, then see if anything is starting up in your win.ini and sys.ini.
in win.ini load and run should equal blank ex: run=
load=
in sys.ini explorer shell should equal explorer.exe ex: explorer shell=explorer.exe
if there is anything different make note of it, such as run=cqg.exe
load=cqg.exe then delete these entries (cqg.exe) and reboot, same for the sys.ini. then go back to the registry do a search for cqg.exe and delete the key value where you see the cqg.exe, then reboot. you may also want to check all the run services in all the hkeys to make sure you got it all. then go to where you originally saw the cqg.exe in startup and delete it from there and reboot.
perhaps someone out there has some more info.
hope this helps,
murve
