My Computer unexpectedly turned off this morning. I was not using it at the time, but there may have been some internet explorer windows and other programs open at the time. The screen was off. I tried to hard boot it, but it wouldn't start. I checked to make sure it had power and then tried again, it started. Only this time it made an unusual whining noise and then made some beeps. When the beeps stopped, the whinning continued and this is what the screen said:

Award Medallion BIOS V6.0

Copyright 2003 Hewlett Packard, Inc.
Rev. 3.16

Intell (R) Celeron (R) 2400 HHz
Processor Memory Test: 515096K + 8192K Shared Memory

Award Plug and Play BIOS Extension V1.0A

Press F1 to enter setup

When I try to press F1 or any other button, nothing happens. I guess I am at a total loss for what happened and what to do next. Can anyone help? I would really appreciate it!

During the start-up/boot sequence tap the delete key, and it should take you into the bios. Do not change anything if you do not have the mother board's instruction booklet. You should see a hardware health area, check it to see what the cpu temperatures are and what the fan speeds are. There will also be a default setting. If you select it it will reset everything to the default settings. You must select save settings if you decide to set it to the default settings when you exit the bios. The computer will then go through the start sequence. To enter the safe mode, you tap the F8 key during the start sequence. The safe mode only has the absolute essential function running. You need to select administrator and you can see if the computer will keep on running and not shut down on you while it is in the safe mode. This will give you an idea if it is a power problem, or other hardware/software problem.

At this point the computer is still doing the unusual whining noise and is still on the same screen. The keyboard and mouse which are wireless do not seem to be transmitting to the receiver. I tried hooking up the mouse to my laptop and it works fine. I am unable to press any key at all f1, f8 or otherwise. HELP!

From the noise you describe I think you have a power supply or fan failure. An INTEL CPU, will automatically shut down to prevent any damage to the cpu. If your HP is say three years old, I would get a high quality, name brand power(Antec, Enermax, FSP) supply and swap it out with the old one.

OPen the case and make sure it is free of all the dust bunnies and crud. Then listen for what fan is making the noise.

My husband has the case open and both fans seems to be going. The sound is coming from a fan, but we don't know which one. There is a lot of dust and fuzz in the case, we don't have any canned air to blow it out.

I am sure that you have a standard intel cpu cooler. The cooling fins might be full of dust bunnies and that would cause the cpu to shut down. If it is the power supply fan, the fan would be the top fan at the rear of the case. You will see four phillips head retaining screws that holds the power supply in place. You can put your ear right up next to the power supply fan, and if it is making the noise that is the problem. Power Supplies are fairly simple to replace, and they are usually the first major hardware component to fail in a HP computer. They are also not that expensive. Just get a good name brand one, and you do not need one with over 350watts.
