I'm confused about svchost.exe, I currently have 7 svchost's running(4 system, 2 Network service, and 1 Local Service)I heard that in some cases its just a file that is necessary to run Windows XP, but a variant of it is a virus. Also according to Wintasks they (the svchosts) are taking up a good deal of RAM from my computer. When the computer is idle doing nothing its using 40% of my RAM. Can anyone help me?
Peace

Yeah, thanks, all of my svchosts are in the system32 folder, but i still think its kinda weird that they take up so much of my RAM.
Peace

svchost.exe is a sytem file. but this file is exploited a lot by parasites.
You need to check carefully on spelling.
here is more info on svchost.exe

svchost.exe IS NOT neccessarily a virus. It is needed by Windows. It is just that some viri & worms use svchost to do thier dirty deeds. I would suspect svchost in cases like yours where it shows high CPU usage.
I am logged on to a company network and have a VPN client running also. With XP - I have 4 instances of svchost.exe running. 2 are by SYSTEM, one by NETWORK SERVICE and one by LOCAL SERVICE. All are showing 0% CPU time in Task Manager.
WILL POST FOR FOOD.

Just in case there is confusion here.
"svchost.exe IS NOT neccessarily a virus"
That's right.But, scvhost.exe is a virus.

The bottomline is that viruses sometimes try to hide by pretending to be legitimate Windows system applications running in background. Sometimes they replace the application, sometimes they have a name similar to that of a legitimate application. However an up-to-date AVS running in real time will catch these so if you're not getting a virus warning you're probably OK.
What you have to watch out for are poorly written legitimate programs that open multiple instances of a Windows app like svchost.exe and never close it when done with it. That eats your memory up. Network devices often require this particular app running in background all the time so you're probably OK.

Thanks everyone, well my svchosts don't really take up any cpu usage its just that they take up a whole lot of RAM. I use spybot, adaware, and McAfee AV and they don't really catch anything so I guess I'm okay...
Peace

I would do 2 more checks.
