When booting normally and choosing a User, it begins to load settings and shows the icons for a minute, then apparently when it goes to load something in the tray, it hangs, and everything disappears except the wallpaper. System then hangs or at most CTRL ALT DELETE allows you to shut down. This happens with all user profiles. Ran Ad Aware from Safe mode which temporarily fixed problem but problem reoccured as soon as switched users. Rerunning Ad Aware did not fix the problem. Spybot found no problems nor did Norton Antivirus. [when this first occurred it appeared to disable Norton and live update refused to load latest definitions. When system was temporarily fixed after running Ad Aware, uninstalled Norton AV and installed SAV 9.1. Virus scan still showed nothing although quite a few files were shown as excluded. Tried loading. Cannot uninstall Symantec in SafeMode. Any suggestions? the file found appears to be a Trojan.

Did you turn system restore off and then restart the computer before you entered the safe mode?
yes I turned off system restore and restarted.
I am a little confused about your antivirus program's status. Does it work, can you use it while in the safe mode, does it have the latest updates, what trojan do you think you have? Do you have Microsoft's antispyware program? Have you used an on line scan like http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
Yes Symantec's SAV 9.1 is installed and runs in safemode. I am not using microsoft's antispyware but have Ad Aware and Spybot.com. When I run Ad Aware, it finds multiple instances of Win32.TrojanDownloader.Lastad.h and deletes them. Usually afterwards I can logon normally with Zone Alarm and Symantec enabled and it works for a little while until I try to switch users. I am running the latest version of ZoneAlarm. But somehow the Trojan seems to reinstall itself and I am back to square one with the icons disappearing. Do you have a better solution for cleaning?
Try Kaspersky' on line scan at
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscannerYou could also try a trial version of Kaspersky. It is one of the best programs at detecting trojans and cleaning them.
Be sure that system restore is off, and that you have deleted all the temp and off file files.
try cwshredder and hijackthis. copy and paste your hijack this log at http://www.hijackthis.de./ and delete what it tells you 2 Please keep us updated so we know if we helped you or not.
